Attorney Services in Kent, WA

We have practiced law from the same block of West Smith Street since November 2010. Same city, same phone, two decades of King County cases. That matters more than it sounds. When a client walks in after a rear-end collision on Central Avenue, or sits down to sort out custody, they are not hiring a stranger who commutes in from Seattle.

We handle three kinds of work: injury claims, family law, and estate planning. Civil litigation runs alongside all three when a case has to be argued rather than settled.

Injury claims

Most of our injury work starts with a phone call within a week of the accident. That timing helps. Evidence goes stale fast. Skid marks wash away, witnesses move, and vehicles get repaired or scrapped.

We take on:

Our process has four steps and we do not vary them much, because the order protects the case.

First, a free consultation. You tell us what happened. We tell you what the claim looks like and what it does not.

Second, investigation. We gather the records, photos, and witness statements, and we bring in outside experts when the injury or the liability picture calls for it.

Third, negotiation. If the insurer will not pay what the file is worth, we litigate.

Fourth, our fee. On injury cases we work on a contingency basis. No recovery, no legal fee.

The adjuster usually calls the day after a crash. Friendly, quick, and ready with a number.

Who do you think that early offer is built to protect?

It arrives before anyone knows how bad the injury really is, which is exactly the point. Talk to us before you sign anything or give a recorded statement.

One piece of Washington law worth knowing

Washington gives you three years from the date of an injury to file a personal injury lawsuit. Miss it and the claim is gone, no matter how strong it was.

Washington is also a pure comparative fault state. If a jury decides you were 20 percent responsible, your award drops by 20 percent. It is not a bar to recovery. That rule is why insurers work so hard to pin part of the blame on you, and why what you say in the first week matters.

Family law

We have done family law since 1984, and our approach here is deliberately different from the injury side. We push toward collaborative resolution and early mediation first. Not because conflict scares us, but because a contested trial can cost more than the assets being argued over.

That is an opinion, and we will say it plainly. Most families are better served by a negotiated parenting plan than by a judge who meets them for ninety minutes.

We handle divorce, legal separation, child custody and visitation, child support, spousal support, property and debt division, prenuptial agreements, protection orders, adoption and paternity.

Our family law process runs six steps: consultation and case evaluation, a strategy built for your family, filing and paperwork, representation in court, ongoing guidance, and help after the order is entered. That last step gets skipped by a lot of firms. Orders need modifying. Circumstances change.

Estate planning

An estate plan is the one legal document set that most people put off and everyone eventually needs.

We draft wills, set up living and revocable trusts, prepare powers of attorney and healthcare directives, handle asset protection, guide families through probate, and build plans for children and for family members with special needs.

Our estate planning runs a seven-step process, starting with a consultation about what you own and who depends on you, and ending with a signed, witnessed plan you can actually find when it is needed. We talk in plain language. No complicated legal talk.

Civil litigation

Some disputes have nothing to do with an injury or a family. Contract fights, business disagreements, property disputes.

Our civil litigation practice covers those. Washington gives you six years on a written contract and three years on most tort claims, so the runway is longer than people assume. Longer is not the same as unlimited.

What it costs

We will not quote you a settlement figure over the phone. Anyone who does is guessing.

Here is how our fees actually work:

  • Injury cases run on contingency. We are paid from the recovery. If there is none, you owe no legal fee.
  • Family law and estate planning are billed by the hour or as a flat fee for defined work, agreed in writing before we start.
  • The first consultation is free, across every practice area.

Why do two people with nearly identical injuries walk away with very different settlements?

Documentation. The client who saw a doctor the same week, kept every receipt, and stayed off social media almost always does better than the one who waited a month and posted photos from a hiking trip. Insurers read those posts. We have seen a single vacation photo knock five figures off a claim.

Why a Kent firm

We know the local courts, the local adjusters, and the roads where these crashes keep happening. We have watched Kent grow for forty years from one office.

Jeffrey Floyd practices alongside his son Evan, with Cameron Pearson of counsel. Small firm, direct access. You will not be handed off to a case manager you never met.

Forty years in one building also means we have seen how the same intersections and the same properties keep producing the same injuries. We know which apartment complexes ignore ice on their walkways every January. We know how the local adjusters value a soft tissue claim versus a fracture, because we have negotiated with many of them for two decades.

That local knowledge is not marketing. It shortens investigations and it changes what a case is worth.

What to do first

If you are reading this in the days after an accident, do these things in order.

See a doctor, even if you feel fine. Adrenaline hides injuries for a day or two, and a gap in treatment is the first thing an insurer points at.

Photograph everything while it still exists. The vehicle, the scene, the hazard, your injuries as they change over the following week.

Report the accident to your own insurer, and keep the report factual. Do not guess at fault.

Then stop talking about it. No recorded statements, no signed releases, no social media.

Call us before the offer arrives, not after you have accepted it. Once a release is signed the claim is closed for good.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to talk to an attorney?

Nothing. The first consultation is free in every practice area we handle. You will leave knowing whether you have a case worth pursuing.

How long do I have to file an injury claim in Washington?

Three years from the date of the injury for most personal injury claims. Some situations shorten that, so do not wait to ask.

Will my case go to court?

Most do not. Most injury claims settle, and most family matters resolve through negotiation or mediation. We prepare every file as though it will be tried, which is part of why they settle.

Do you handle cases outside Kent?

Yes. We are based in Kent and take cases across King County and the wider Puget Sound area.

What should I bring to the first meeting?

Whatever you already have. A police report, photos, medical records, insurance letters, or a bank statement. If you have nothing yet, come anyway.

Our office is at 555 W Smith St #104, Kent, WA 98032. Call (206) 575-7562 or contact us and we will get you in.
